Post-Storm Recovery

Post-Storm Recovery:

The days and weeks following a natural disaster can be a stressful time during the recovery period.  It's critical to prioritize safety, assess damage, and be aware of recovery efforts and local resources.  Immediately following the storm, city staff will be out assessing damage.  More information on this process may be found at the following link: https://www.cityoffortpierce.com/DocumentCenter/View/47545/Understanding-Safety-Procedures-and-Postings-for-Major-Disasters.

Safety:

  • Stay informed: Listen and watch for updates from the city, Emergency Operations Center, local news and NOAA Weather Radio for updates and instructions from local officials.
  • Returning home: Only return home when local officials deem it safe.  Be aware of potential hazards such as downed power lines, downed trees, gas leaks and road damage.
  • Avoid flooded waters: Turn around, don't drown!
  • Re-entering your property: Check for damage and use caution when re-entering your property.  Watch out for structural damage and broken glass.  Look before you step.  The ground and floors may be covered with debris including broken glass, nails and screws.  Floors and stairs may be slippery.  If you have damage that makes staying in your home unsafe, find alternate shelter and have a professional assess and repair the damage.
  • Be cautious with electricity: If you see sparks, turn off the electricity at the main breaker and contact your utility company and/or a licensed electrician.
  • Be cautious with gas: Use a flashlight if necessary to inspect for damage.  Do not smoke or use candles, lanterns or open flames unless you know there are no gas leaks, or the gas has been turned off.  If you smell gas, leave the structure until it's been properly ventilated.  Contact your local utility company and/or gas company.

Assessing Damage and Recovery:

  • Document damage: Take photos of any damage for insurance purposes and local damage assessments.
  • Contact your insurance company: Report any damage to your insurance company as soon as possible.
  • Dispose of debris properly: Follow local instructions for debris removal.
  • Help your family, friends and neighbors: Assist those in need.  Numerous volunteering opportunities may be available.
  • Be patient: Recovery efforts and utility restoration will take time.  Please be patient while local officials are performing damage assessments, clearing debris and restoring utilities.
  • Repairs & recovery: The Building Department urges you to hire licensed individuals and companies to handle post-storm repairs, clean up, tree removal and debris removal.  Be cautious of unlicensed contractors taking advantage of the high demand for work.

Important Reminders:

  • Drinking water safety: Do not drink tap water until local authorities say it is safe.  Use bottled water or boil tap water before consumption.
  • Generator safety: Use generators and other gasoline powers equipment outdoors.  Follow safety guidelines, including proper ventilation.
  • Food safety: Only use propane and charcoal cooking appliances outdoors.  Carbon monoxide may be deadly.  Check refrigerated and frozen foods for spoilage after power is restored.
  • Standing water safety: Do not let children play in or around high water, storm drains or ditches.  Besides the danger of drowning, backed up sewage and possible toxic runoff makes this water unsafe and unsanitary.
